It is a very disturbing and complex mood disorder accompanied with dramatic mood swings. A person with bipolar disorder type 2 will experience emotional mood swings. They will go from being very happy to extremely irritable or depressed and back again. Often times changes in energy levels are also present. The difference between bipolar 1 and bipolar 2 is that bipolar disorder type 2 is not as sever as type 1. Type 2 is accompanied by hypomanic episodes, where as type 1 will reach complete mania. There are 4 types of bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder type 2 is recognized if the patient is diagnosed with at least having one occurrence of a hypomanic episode in their life. Hypomanic episodes are defined as elevated and irritable mood swings that will persist for at least 4 days. It is not uncommon for people suffering from this complex mood disorder completely normal lives. Anyone can be at risk of developing bipolar disorder type 2. The symptoms will usually present themselves with people in their late teens to early 20's. What if this illness goes undetected or untreated? The episodes can last from a few days to many years. However, treatment is encouraged as thoughts of suicide can be present. People with bipolar disorder type 2 can often seem like the life of the party, telling jokes, having a good time. They take interest in the people around them, which makes them pleasant to be with. This may sound like a very positive thing but this kind of behavior can also become more extreme. When a person is suffering from bipolar disorder type 2 and are experiencing an upswing in mood and behavior, they may also involve themselves in unhealthy behavior. This could lead to behavior as extreme as seeking out relationships with people they would normally not engage with. When the mood swings to depression, it will be similar to regular clinical depression which can last for weeks. If detected and diagnosed, a person with bipolar disorder type 2 is capable of living out a normal healthy life.
